The ‘Vegshat e Gojanit’ clay pot

Making a clay pot involves the following 11 stages:

Stage one- Digging up soil dirt to extract what is called botë, which is a specially hardened grey and a red mound of clay

Stage two – Drying of “rocks”

Stage three – Smashing “rocks” up into dust (clay powder)

Stage four- Screening the clay using a screened box or pouring it through a strainer to filter out larger chunks and debris

Stage five- Processing the clay. Stirring the mixture and knead it using hot water until it turns into a slurry

Stage six- Making of the clay pot on the wheel. During this stage, the clay pot is molded and fully shaped, by hand, a process that takes 2 to 3 hours

Stage seven – Natural drying of the pot which lasts one week

Stage eight- Once hardened, the pot is placed near the kiln under a not too high temperature, until it is completely dried. This process takes about one day

Stage nine- Baking the pot in the kiln. At this stage, the pot is placed inside a high-temperature kiln and left there until it is completely heated.

Stage ten- Once the pot is completely heated, it is thereupon pulled out of the kiln and all smeared with tallow

Stage eleven – Cooling and water cleaning of the pot (Rinsing)
