Azhuri (drawn-out eyelet embroidery) is quite a common practice of craftwork in this region. It is mainly applied onto thin fabric, which is used for headdresses and beddings and for decorating their edges. This process goes through several steps: the first step is drawing out portions of rows of threads consecutively with a needle. The thickness of azhuri depends on the number of threads drawn out. Next, the fabric is stitched or woven with needle and thread, usually in the same color as the foundation fabric. The threads of the fabric are grouped in different amounts and methods to produce various types of azhuri patterns. Azhuri workpieces come in about 10 forms and shapes, such as diamond-shaped azhur, meandering azhur, chain azhur, and so on.
