Handicraft of “Cyla dyjare”

Cyla dyjare or longari, originally a single melody wind instrument, otherwise known as a double-sounding flute, is usually made from a single block of maple or piksi (boxwood), which is cut down in autumn. Maple wood is found in Kardhiq province, while boxwood is very rare.

Artisanal manufacturing of cyla dyjare instrument:

To begin with, a square section of wood about 40 cm tall and 10 cm thick is cut down, carved on both sides with an adze, and shaped with a draw knife. At the upper part to be put in the mouth, the “fipple mouthpieces” are shaped with a thin chip cutting knife; 4 finger holes are opened on the right pipe and three on the left pipe. These measures are taken with the naked eye. After working the instrument on such a flat plate-like piece of wood, little windows are also contoured by free-hand lines.

Knives used in making a cyla dyjare come in a couple of types: u-shaped gouges, sharp tip knives for the mouthpieces, and a drill bit for the holes.

Once the instrument is crafted, certain ornate elements such as flowers or folk motifs, birds, and national symbols are skillfully carved on it.

Varnishing completes the process.
